Fragrance Lingers ~ A Love in the City Romance by Dellani Oakes – Part 12

"The fact that Mara blushed deep red when I walked in the room, and you wouldn't meet my eyes. Nothing bad, I hope?"

"Not at all," Mara told him honestly. "Everything good, really good, for the first time ever."

"Great! I hate complications. Let's get in the water!"

Their lesson took up most of the morning. They stopped for lunch with Dennis. He brought a picnic basket to the beach and carried the remnants away with him.

"How about a swim? I'm tired of scuba gear," Cole said.

"I'd like that," Mara replied honestly. "But there's something else I want to do first."

"Oh?" Cole's eyes shifted from sparkling to fiery in an instant.

As if he knew what she was thinking, he took her firmly in his arms. They sat on the sand, kissing and fondling for what seemed like hours. She couldn't get enough of Cole's lips on hers. She burned from his touch, his fingers igniting flames within her that she never wanted put out. He didn't try to take it any further, but she grew wild with desire. If part of his plan for the day was to make her crazy with lust, it was working wonderfully well. They spent the afternoon swimming, kissing and practicing with the tanks.

Around four, Dennis came back down to the beach. "I had a thought. How about staying for dinner? Red's on his way and he's bringing a few people with him. We'll have an old fashioned clam bake here on the beach and roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories."

Cole chuckled. "Dad, you twisted my arm. Mara?"

"It sounds irresistible," she agreed. "Can we run back to the hotel? I really need to shower and change."

"Nonsense! Becky's got things here, you two are about the same size. You help yourself to anything you need. Cole will show you the guest suite." He grinned broadly, flashing the same disarming smile as his son.

They walked back up to the house and Cole led her to what looked like a shanty beside the main house. Built into the side of a low cliff, Mara thought it was a storage shed.

"It's more than meets the eye," Cole told her when she hesitated at the door. "Trust me." He yanked on her hand.

The door opened on a neatly organized shed where the air tanks and other scuba gear were stored. Another door opened into a low ceilinged room. They took several steps down and were standing on solid stone.

"It's a small cave that we discovered a long time ago. It was the original house here and we kept it for company. Becky always stays out here with Red, when they come down together. He's in the same hotel as you right now," he explained. "He doesn't like to impose on Dad when he's only here a few days."

Cole tugged her hand again and led her into a comfortable bedroom. The bed was a large four poster with an old fashioned patchwork quilt. The walls and were natural stone, the furniture the same ascetic, rustic look as that in the main house.

"Dad made the furniture himself," Cole remarked, leading her to a wardrobe in the corner. "Here's Becky's stuff," he opened the drawers and stood back as she grabbed some new panties from an unopened package, a top and some shorts that looked like they would fit.

"She won't mind?"

"No, not at all. I'll let you get cleaned up." He kissed her lightly on the lips. With a sorrowful glance at the bed, he left, closing the door.

Mara went after him. "Cole?"

"Yeah?" He turned at the sound of her voice, his hand on the door.

"It's just...well...we've finally got some privacy...."

"I know, but Dad's expecting me upstairs to get things set up. Otherwise, he'd have said for us both to get cleaned up. It's his way of saying not under my roof."

"I can respect that."

"Yeah, me too. But I can't wait to get you home."

"Me either," she smiled.

Cole blew her a kiss and walked out, closing the door firmly behind him. She heard him as he walked away, "Dammit! Err!" Followed by the outer door slamming firmly shut.

She had to laugh because it mirrored her feelings exactly.

Dinner under the stars was fantastic. The old fashioned clam bake also included barbecued ribs, burgers and lots of side dishes. The few friends that came with Red were the band and the director of their new video. Most of the people were locals and knew Dennis and Cole well. Mara would have felt like the odd man out, but everyone made her feel incredibly welcome.

Stuffed and relaxed, they sat around the fire, roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories. Afterward, the band got guitars, bongos and a ukulele from their van and sat around playing until late into the night. Mara enjoyed their music more than what they had been playing at the restaurant. It was a mixture of reggae and rock with an exotic island flavor. She sat by Cole, leaning against a driftwood log, with his arm around her. She laid her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes while she let the music wash over her.
